OG JUNGLE ENERGY, FRESH CUTS: DJ ODI DELIVERS BREAKING NIGHT

I’m super excited to dive into DJ Odi’s latest offering, Breaking Night. Before I get into the track by track, let me give you some context: DJ Odi isn’t just a name in the U.S. jungle & drum & bass scene — he’s one of the OGs who helped sculpt its sound, especially on the East Coast, and continues to push it forward with new energy.

Setting the Stage: DJ Odi’s Journey

I’ve been tuning into Jungle sets most of my life, and it’s wild to think just how foundational DJ ODI has been in the scene. Born Carlos “Odi” Castillo in the Bronx, raised in Harlem, he came up in the early/mid 90s rave culture, NASA parties, Shelter, and the whole breakbeat/techno wave that evolved into jungle and DnB.

Straight out of high school, he started promoting and DJing at those NASA raves, eventually locking into a residency with Konkrete Jungle NYC. Along with his crew, Digital Konfusion, ODI built a platform that fused hip-hop influence with the raw energy of jungle, helping define a jump-up/hipstep flavor unique to NYC and the East Coast.

Over time, he expanded his role: vinyl curator for Satellite Records NYC, import buyer at Nemesis, label work with Digital Konfusion and Jungle Sky imprint, radio shows like The Hijack on nycjungle.com and the Digital Konfusion Mixshow, and a reputation for tight mixing and dubplate skills.

Nowadays, Odi is based around Cincinnati, running his own recording setup, touring nationally, and continuing to drop new material and mixes.

So with that lineage, Breaking Night feels like a moment: a bridge between Odi’s roots and the fresh energy he’s still putting into the scene.

Breaking Night Track by Track

Here’s my take on each of the six tracks, and what they bring to the vibe of the album:

Track 1 – Claws
This opener immediately sets the tone: crisp drums, a moody build, and a low end that sneaks in before dropping into a groove. It’s atmospheric but with a backbone, you can feel Odi flexing his decades of experience in structuring a set, even within a single track. It’s like the calm before the storm, inviting you in.

Track 2 – Hit ‘Em Up
The second cut ramps things up with heavier break chops and a more driving bassline. It’s one of those tunes that feels perfect for the moments when the energy in the room is rising, the kind of track that has you looking at the dancers and thinking yeah, you feel that too, don’t you?

Track 3 – I Wanna Rock
This track immediately fills me with the nostalgia of 90s Jungle madness. This track offers a heavy hip-hop presence layered over darker drums and rolling basslines. It breathes a little, gives space, but still holds tension with every snare hit. There’s a sense of movement; you can imagine DJs using this as a little pivot or tension builder in a set.

Track 4 – Icarus
This one hits harder again. The breaks are sharp, the bass hits deep, and Odi’s mixing instincts shine: little percussive fills, subtle syncopation, and a rhythmic bounce that catches your head nodding. It feels like a jungle classic with Amen breaks and hard-hitting bass kicks.

Track 5 – Outta Brooklyn
Here, the mood shifts slightly, more atmospheric pads, a sense of space, but still grounded in the groove. That deep bassline had my body moving without a thought. There’s a bit of emotional weight to it, like Odi is letting the listener catch their breath, but without losing momentum. I could almost imagine a breakdown being built from this into the final track.

Track 6 – Ready
The closer brings things home with energy and resolution while featuring MC Foxy’s fiery vocals. It leans heavier on the bass, gives the drums room to do some flexing, and finishes with flair. It’s got that “last track of the night” feeling, euphoric, driving, nostalgic, but forward-looking. It wraps up the journey in a way that makes you want to hit play again.

Where to listen to Breaking Night

Breaking Night is live now and you can stream or download it on major platforms. As far as I know, it’s available on:

  • Spotify
  • Apple Music
  • Bandcamp with options for high-quality download

If you’re into digging deeper or supporting the artist directly, Bandcamp is always a solid bet, plus you often get better audio fidelity and the chance to own it rather than just stream.

Final Thoughts

From where I’m standing, Breaking Night is a solid reaffirmation of why Odi is a name you will always want in your playlist. It’s not just nostalgia; these tracks are fresh, well-crafted, and have that dancefloor-ready vibe, but also respect the roots.

If you’re into drum & bass, jungle, or just want something with a lot of soul and energy behind it, this album is worth spinning front to back. DJ Odi has paid his dues, earned his stripes, and with Breaking Night, he’s reminding us he’s not just here to revisit the past, he’s pushing it forward.
