“No Obligations” is a seasonal event that takes place at the famous punk-rock and dive-bar in Indianapolis, The Melody Inn. This work perfect here considering The Mel is a place where so many people, of so many different tastes in music, all feel very fondly of, and come together on any random night of the week. Which makes it a great place for a type of event for local DJs to come together to basically just play what’s they feel like playing and not be bound to a particular genre or brand. I was asked to play last week in the midst of my own campaigns and said, “Fuck it – why not?” Which brings me to this weekend, in the midst of that campaign(which grew much bigger than I imagined), here comes Galan wanting to give me a totally random booty-house mix like: “Hey Man, can you listen to my booty-house mix and put it out?” and I’m like wtf man? This was when I was in the midst of just announcing 6 mixes that were being released, before I knew 4 more were coming in. I told him I’d squeeze it in if I could before his set on Tuesday because he was also playing at No Obligations. We’ll, looks like everything worked out. I’m presenting this feature this way and telling you all this because the way this scenario has played out for me personally has felt like totally the most random shit and it ties into the spirit of the evening. At least the way I see it. Do what you feel, “No Obligations”. Or to spin it another way, in the words of Digital Underground and The late-great, Shock G, “Do Whatcha Like.”
Galen told me this was a tribute to his esteemed friend, Steady B, who was just in town over the weekend. Galen played all the classic shit and also some stuff I hadn’t heard yet. A nice little get down, if you need that booty style in your life.
