I’m going to keep my part in this short. I have never been more proud of this community in my life, and it is an honor to play the very small part I have in it. Seeing people coming together to try and help a friend fulfill a lifelong wish has been incredibly moving. Jason has touched so many people’s lives, including mine. He was the first person to let me in, and give me a position in his crew, when I decided I was coming back to the Indianapolis dance scene in 2019. He was responsible for getting me my first mixes from local DJs for Graveyard Radio. He’s responsible for introducing me to my closest friend in the scene, Laura of Anita Bass. She has been a main supporting pillar of Graveyard Radio since day one, and is responsible for graveyardradio.net existing today.

None of this would of ever been a thing if not for Jason being who he is as a person. He has always been a force for good in the community. We don’t know what the future holds, but we hope we can give back and bless someone, who has blessed all our lives so much. I’m going to pass this microphone to Courtney, she had a lot to say people should know.

This post is entirely overdue, but that’s because in large part…..I (Courtney) don’t really want to write it. To remind ourselves that one of our dearest friends, and loooong time supporter, is fighting such a terribly unfair fight fucking sucks. Who would WANT to, right? But Jason Morrall has been in our corner for basically our entire existence, all the way back to 2015, so we have a lot of love to share about him, so here goes…

Whether it was The Mel or in the Barcade under Skybar on Meridian, Jason was always one of the few folks we could count on to be dancing in the shadows. DNB wasn’t his first love (that will alway be acid techno) but he had a soft spot for it and appreciated the DIY ethos behind NAPDNB. Man was driving down from Pendleton twice a month most months just to hang and get his fix of some freaky beats. What we recognized in him was a passion for the rave that was unmatched in just about anyone else we’d encountered. And while he may have been absent from the party for a period, his enthusiasm to dive back in to support and create was overwflowing. He’d lived through raving at its pinnacle and that was a dragon he was only too happy to chase down any basement, tunnel or dark alley Indy would provide for him. His passion entranced us and by summer of 2016, he was our alumni guide for the return of the seminal Midwest Techno rave, Even Furthur; which included a 10 hr car ride, torrential rains, flooding, closed roads, no cell signal, no sleep for 3 days, muddy stuck cars and more bass weight than an average human rib cage can handle over 7 different rigs and stages. Keeping tabs on him was like trying to trap a feral tom cat – constantly driven by his need to dance as a form of communicating his inner self. Every time he’d come breezing back into camp, his jubilant smile and tales of the adventures he was having from stage to stage showed just how at ease the rave made him. The way he can live in the moment inside those spaces is to be admired. The magic of that weekend dumped fuel on the fire already burning inside of Jason, and he started plotting and planning his quest to revive true blue underground rave culture in Indy. But execution takes time when you’re developing something special; it had to be the right space and the right people for his inaugural event. It couldn’t be a bar or nightclub, and it shouldn’t really be anywhere one would expect dance music and partying to happen. Enter Healer, an otherworldly artist collective and performance space that is like a fever dream of unbridled artistic expression. True freedom-of-self exists within its walls, and Jason was drawn to it immediately. Bonus perk, it was all ages – a factor we agreed was deeply important to the succes and growth of the rave community. July 2019 Jason’s promotion company Universal Vibe launched with the first in a series of “microraves” called “re:Heat”. The night was expertly curated for the most discerning of 4 on the floor appreciators. NonCompliant, Acid Daddy, Fortune and Pat Bosman provided a STACKED set of headliners. Local heat included Duck Trash, DJ Fate, Kene Mahusay (aka DiscObey) and Organix. While Jason considered this party a “microrave” due to not being able to go into the early morning hours (a key point in his definition of a TRUE rave), the one thing it did do superbly just like the old warehouse days, was blow the circuit board multiple times during the night due to the power draw from our cobbled together speakers and lighting equipment. While the NAPDNB crew played just a small part in helping make re:Heat happen, we were honored to be asked to do it. Anything that was pushing dance music out of the bars and clubs and into more interesting spaces was something we supported and wanted more of! Didn’t take Jason long to throw the next installment either. “re:Think” saw Chicago giant Hiroko Yamamura gracing the stage; “re:Work” could hardly contain the firepower of local legend Adam Jay and Acid master DJ Hyperactive from Chicago. Each party was building upon the success of the last. Word was spreading that there was a “real rave” happening in some random strip mall on the southside. “re:Vision” was next up and set to feature Rondell Adams and Robert Armani doing an epic 3 hour B2B but it was March 2020 and you can all guess how that ended up going…….it didn’t. But there was very little that was going to deter Jason from pursuing this series. With the down time of lockdown, he continued building his visual display carefully crafted from tube tvs he spent years rescuing from roadsides and attics. He was still plotting another microrave too. As soon as Healer built an outdoor area to continue supporting themselves, Jason knew it was time to strike. “re:Start” would feature one of his ultimate heroes, Woody McBride aka DJ ESP. This party was one of the first in person events in months and was a welcome gathering! It gave us back a feeling of some normality again and wet the appetites of a few.

I could go on and on about the success of these parties and how admirable Jason’s unwavering dedication to providing Indy techno in its rawest forms is. About how as we returned to “normal” and Indy’s dance scene continued to bloom, Jason was inspired to take his efforts to the next level and accomplish one of his ultimate goals: throw a rave in a secret spot that was actually illegal. Ravers would have to WORK for the info to get to the party. They’d really have to want it! Or how this mad man then went about scouting the entire city for the perfect place. It had to be discrete yet accessible. Far enough away from residential areas that noise won’t immediately draw attention, but still in the city. I could yap forever about his relentless belief that he could pull it off, and how despite skepticism from many, he found the spot. Tucked under a railroad bridge in an industrial area on the southeast side lay our next dance floor. Sonic Attenuation was born of the blood, sweat and sleepless nights of one man simply because it existed inside of him and he would never rest until he got it out. And OUT he got it! A hundred plus people spilled down the embankment to experience freedom like never before. We even made it to 1 am before the cops stumbled upon us! They couldn’t even really be mad as they were more impressed that Jason and team had managed to get a massive sound system down there without disaster and that it was so successful. The party didn’t stop though! Oh no, we headed to Marilyn Rose and kept things pumping until the sun came up! Real, true, rave complete! That night, Jason was the walking, talking, dancing personification of true ecstasy. Despite hiccups he was beaming from ear to ear all night. Watching folks surround him at the afters to congratulate him on an amazing accomplishment and tell him it was their first was one of the highlights of the evening for his closest friends. We always knew he’d do it, somehow, some way, and we were thrilled he never gave up!

Not long after this though, Jason’s health began to become a troublesome factor in his commitment to the dance. He spent more time than it should have taken (thanks US healthcare system!) trying to determine the source of the pain he was experiencing. We knew that not only was he physically hurting, but spiritually as well because raving was his church and he’d been away from it in any serious way for about a year and a half. Through his tireless advocacy for himself, and unfortunate worsening of his condition, we found out in early 2025 that what was keeping our dear friend away from us was cancer. A devastating diagnosis of metastatic small cell carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP). This form is a rare, aggressive, terminal cancer and much to everyone’s heartbreak we soon learned that it had alread spread to his liver, bones, and lymph nodes. To say our community of friends has been grappling with what it means to lose one of our favorite people would be an understatement. We love Jason beyond measure and if throwing one last party would mean we could stop this awful train, we would have thrown 100 by now. What throwing one last party CAN do though, is help him fulfill a lifelong wish. I refuse to call it a “dying wish” because deep down I think we all hope against all odds that he could be part of the small percentage of people who survive. Nevertheless, sending Jason to Berlin to attend one of the holiest of all Techno events, Tresor, is the whole point of this. Joining forces with the OG crew who first help get this all up and running with Jason is a gift from all our hearts to his because words fail to fully express just how much we love and will miss him. If you’re one of the many who have passed through the doors of Healer in the past, please join us. If you’re a newer friend who’s enjoyed watching the sunrise with heavy bass washing over you in the woods, please join us. If you’re a techno, house or dnb fan, please join us. They say love and dance have transcending powers, and we KNOW Jason knows that, so help us fill Healer with so much love and energy from our dancing bodies that it uplifts and strengthens him so he can continue to persevere and make it to his mecca.
We love you Jason, rave to the grave <3
